Richard Quinney was born and raised on the family farm in Walworth County. He received the doctorate degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 1962 and taught sociology at several universities, including University of Kentucky and New York University, and is Professor Emeritus at Northern Illinois University. He is the author of academic books in sociology and a series of autobiographical books with titles Journey to a Far Place, For the Time Being, Where Yet the Sweet Birds Sing, A Lifetime Burning, The Morning Hour, Still Life with Camera, and Sanctuary. A history of the Quinney family farm is documented in his book Of Time and Place: A Family Farm in Wisconsin. Currently he is engaged in the preservation of the acres of the family homestead he has always called “The Old Place.”
